From #stemflags to #sexism in science, Australian scientists have a lot to say on TikTok
Since we gave you the lowdown on science + TikTok accounts to follow in 2020, a bunch more Australian STEM stars have got busy with reels on everything from renewable energy to sexism in science.
And earlier this year TikTok even set up a dedicated STEM feed – sadly it’s not available for Australian users yet. Whyyyyyy!? While we wait for it here, you can have fun with the #stemflags filter.
Anyways, here’s a refreshed list of Australian TikTokkers in STEM.
1. @drjessallen — Electrochemical engineer explaining renewable energy tech
Superstar of STEM and Newcastle University lecturer Dr Jessica Allen brings the LOLs and daggy dance moves to bust some myths about renewable energy.

2. @kirstenbanks — Astrophysicist bringing fun explainers about space
If you’ve ever wondered whether a human could propel themselves forward in space by farting, then this is the account for you! Wiradjeri woman Kirsten Banks is all over the socials, but her informative TikToks really show her love for space and astronomy.
@astrokirsten Excuse me, things get bigger as they get further away? What?! This is a short clip from a longer YouTube video about the age of the universe. Disclaimer: there is no further explanation of this on YouTube, yet! I will be making a video with further explanation as to why this happens 🤩 #space #astro #spacefacts #universe #spacetok #astrotok #stem #stemtok

3. @constababble — TV presenter and science wiz, master of the lipsync and the odd science-themed rap
We’ve been following Lee Constable for a while now (plus you can see her on many Science Meets Business webinars) and we’re still loving the hilarious lipsyncs and sweet irony of her STEM commentary.
4. @drkarl — making science fun since before many of us were born!
From his egg chair at ABC studios, Dr Karl extends his prolific and fun explanations about weird and wacky science to TikTok, where keeping it fun has netted him more than 500k followers.

6. @astro.katross — astrophysicist and researcher calling out sexism in science
In her day job Dr Kat Ross studies black holes and galaxies, but she also does an excellent job reminding us science is a human endeavour, not a male one. Oh and she can’t help you with your star sign.
@astro.katross where my girls at? cause they sure as hell ain’t in the science curriculum 👀 #sciencetok #perth #WomenInSTEM #stemtok #education

7. @scienceatanu — science experiments and the odd dad joke
Special mention to Science at ANU featuring everything from leeches to chemist Dr Dan Preston putting song lyrics to a science test.
