Meet the student team from Charles Campbell College kicking goals in the F1 in Schools program
The F1 in Schools program is the ultimate STEM competition for students all over the world. Each year more than 17,000 schools in 51 nations take on the challenge of designing and engineering a miniature F1 car that can accelerate to 80 km/h in under one second.
In Australia, 22,000 students take part in this cool comp each year, including Team Propulsion at Charles Campbell College in South Australia.
“The initiation of the F1 in Schools program at Charles Campbell College was driven by my passion for STEM learning and cultivating the next generation of innovators,” says Daniel Marotti, a STEM and technologies teacher at the school. “Through this program, our students have learned effective teamwork, critical thinking, resilience, and creativity. They have tackled engineering challenges, refined their designs, and optimised their manufacturing processes. The F1 in Schools program has equipped our students with invaluable skills and instilled in them the confidence to embrace challenges and excel in their future endeavours.”

Meet Team Propulsion
Noah, team manager
How he’s applying STEM thinking as part of his role: As a team manager, Noah effectively applies STEM thinking to his role, utilising mathematics to manage the team’s finances and budget for the F1 in Schools Competition. By leveraging technological tools and platforms, he optimises team productivity, ensuring seamless communication, efficient collaboration, and effective organisation for enhanced performance in the competition.
Highlight so far: Noah’s participation in the F1 in Schools project has shaped his approach to his online business, applying mathematical analysis to sales data and implementing optimised pricing strategies. Additionally, his tech proficiency has empowered him to utilise e-commerce platforms, create a user-friendly website, and employ digital marketing to expand his customer reach.
Samuels, graphic designer
How he’s applying STEM thinking as part of his role: Samuels effectively applies STEM thinking to his role as a graphic designer by leveraging technology and mathematical principles. He utilises design software and digital tools to create visually appealing layouts for portfolios, posters, team shirts, and social media posts. Additionally, Samuels employs mathematical concepts such as proportion, symmetry, and colour theory to ensure harmonious and balanced designs that captivate the audience.
Highlight so far: Being able to utilise his graphic design skills and witnessing his work manifest in a polished and professional manner across various project elements. It brings him a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction to see the tangible results of his creative efforts.
Juliana, pit display engineer
How she’s applying STEM thinking as part of her role: Juliana demonstrates the application of STEM thinking in her role as a pit display engineer by leveraging technology and engineering principles. Using software like Fusion 360, she designs and prototypes her display, incorporating elements of 3D modelling and CAD. By conducting Finite Element Analysis (FEA) testing, Juliana ensures the structural integrity and strength of her construction. Finally, she utilises her manufacturing skills to bring her design to life, ensuring that the booth meets all the necessary requirements for the competition.
Highlight so far: The opportunity to expand her knowledge in engineering and apply these newly acquired skills to design and manufacture the pit display. It brings her great joy to see her engineering expertise come to life in a tangible and functional product that enhances the team’s performance and showcases their capabilities.
Hoorad, sponsorship manager
How he’s applying STEM thinking as part of his role: Hoorad skilfully applies STEM thinking to his role as a sponsorship manager by employing analytical and mathematical techniques. He utilises his proficiency in data analysis to identify patterns and trends that guide his approach to potential sponsors, increasing the likelihood of securing successful partnerships. Furthermore, Hoorad’s expertise in financial calculations allows him to develop a comprehensive sponsorship prospectus, offering various financial packages that cater to the needs and preferences of different sponsors.
Highlight so far: Gaining a practical understanding of real-world sponsorship deals, allowing them to maximise fundraising efforts and secure necessary funds for the team’s travel while minimising costs. This experience provides valuable insights into the dynamics of sponsorships and equips Hoorad with skills in effective negotiation and financial management.
Kunal, car engineer
How he’s applying STEM thinking as part of his role: Kunal effectively employs STEM thinking in his role as a car engineer by utilising advanced technology and engineering principles. Using software like Fusion 360, he designs and prototypes car models, incorporating elements of 3D modelling and CAD. Additionally, Kunal uses ANSYS, a powerful simulation tool, to create a virtual wind tunnel and assess the aerodynamics of the cars, optimising their performance on the track.
Highlight so far: The opportunity to apply engineering and aerodynamic principles in designing a car that aims to achieve the fastest times at the competition. It allows him to combine his passion for engineering with the thrill of competition, pushing the boundaries of performance and witnessing the results of his design efforts.
AJ, social media manager
How he’s applying STEM thinking as part of his role: AJ demonstrates the application of STEM thinking in his role as a social media manager by leveraging data analysis and strategic decision-making. By analysing social media analytics, AJ identifies trends, patterns, and audience preferences, allowing him to tailor his content and engagement strategies for better audience engagement. Furthermore, AJ expands his reach by exploring and utilising various social media platforms, ensuring maximum exposure and outreach to a wider audience.
