High achieving Qld STEM students – don’t miss this opportunity!

Applications are now open for QUT’s Future You STEM Summit and STEM Internship program

Are you in Year 11 or 12, nailing your STEM subjects and keen to give your future career a head start, before you’ve even started university?

High-achieving Year 11 and 12 students can now apply for two exciting opportunities at QUT in Brisbane this September: the Future You STEM Summit and STEM Internship program.

Taking place from 27-30 September 2022, the Future You STEM Summit will give you a taste of real-world STEM technical skills as you make use of the awesome labs and STEM facilities at QUT’s Garden Point campus in Brisbane.

Run in parallel, the STEM Internship program offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in a research topic and meet STEM mentors, as you become part of a real research team at QUT.

Both programs offer conference-like keynote speaker sessions with industry leaders and STEM experts.

Gabrielle Booth took part in the internship program in 2021, and the experience inspired her to enrol in a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at QUT. “The internship program is really helpful for everyone, whether you know exactly what you want to study at university, if you are sitting on the fence on a degree, or if you have absolutely no idea what you want to study,” she says.

“You will meet really awesome and like-minded people that you may even get to work with in the future. I couldn’t recommend this program more!” (You can read more about Gabrielle’s experience in QUT’s internship program here.)

Explore your future STEM options

QUT’s Dr Ted Pickering, a postdoctoral researcher at the uni’s Bone and Spine Research Group, says the summit is a great opportunity to be exposed to the exciting and diverse world of STEM, and to begin the journey of discovering what your own future career might look like.

“Exploring is good,” says Ted. “You don’t need to know exactly what you want to do. Be excited to learn about different careers. Find your niche. Find what excites you.”

Ted was involved in last years’ STEM Summit, so witnessed firsthand the power of this program. “I loved the opportunity to share my experiences with students and help smooth their pathways to university,” he says.

What to expect

The Brisbane Future You program will run from Tuesday to Friday, 27-30 September.

The Summit will include interactive workshops across some seriously cool-sounding STEM areas including entrepreneurship, innovation, robotics, sustainability and data science. As an intern, you will get to undertake a collaborative, group STEM research project led by a QUT STEM expert.  You will connect with like-minded peers and hear from industry leaders about how they use their STEM mindset everyday.

Attending the Summit or Internship program is free for eligible students, but it will take place in Brisbane and transport and accommodation costs are not included.

Applications are open until 16 May.
