1. The Haunting of Hill House

We weren’t kidding around here, this list is for dedicated fans of fright… Okay, we lied, this list lightens up below. But if you’re in the mood for a serious scare, check out the new Netflix Original series about two siblings that return to face the ghosts of their haunted childhood home.

You may not know her by name, but Shirley Jackson (the author of the novel that this series is loosely based on) was an influence on great horror writers like Stephen King – so you know this one’s going to pack a punch.

2. The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell

Here at Careers with STEM, we love a good slashie – and I don’t mean a slasher movie. (Check out our Find your STEM + X quiz if you don’t know what I’m talking about.)

The next Netflix Original series on our list is this Tim Burton inspired sitcom/cooking show that gives Nailed It a run for its money in the innovative baking stakes.

You’ll join Christine and her gaggle of furry critters as they bake their way through indulgent Halloween-themed snacks and treats. You might not end up making any of these tooth-achingly sweet goodies, but it’s still fun to watch.

3. Haunted

It’s rare that we’ll tell you to put your science-y mind aside, but even the team here at Careers with STEM enjoy indulging in a little ghost story – sans skepticism – around Halloween.

This classic survivor-story documentary tracks the lives of several people who claim to be haunted by ghosts, ghouls and other nefarious underworld creatures. You’ll get a play-by-play of their scariest encounters, illustrated with some truly chilling re-enactments. Maybe leave the lights on for this one.

4. Black Mirror

If you’ve already watched Black Mirror, then forgive us – #oldnews. But, if you haven’t seen this Netflix Original series then you’re missing out on some seriously informative STEM-centric content!

Take every piece of technology you can think of, and imagine its worst-case scenario. That’s the premise of Black Mirror, which follows stories of bio-terror attacks, VR mind control, and social networking turned social scoring in various dystopian futures.

5. Dark Tourist

This travel series is not about putting sunny beaches on your bucket list. Host David Farrier takes us inside the world of dark tourism, where hordes of tourists are exploring truly spooky (and truly real) travel destinations around the globe.

We’re taken on murder tours across famous sites associated with serial killers Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer, for instance. And we’re given an inside look into the burial rituals of a small Indonesian tribe, where the dead aren’t laid to rest until years after their passing.
