If you have a passion for sports and an interest in understanding the mechanics of the human body, then sport science might be the perfect fit for you
Combining elements of biology, physiology, psychology and biomechanics, sport scientists help people improve their athletic performance and overall health. In health + sport science careers, you could travel the world, work with elite sporting teams, or help people recovering from injury.
If you’re sold on a career in sport science, you’ll need a strong foundation in science, particularly biology and physiology. A bachelor’s degree in a related field is typically the first step, followed by graduate studies for more specialised roles, but there are also VET options in exercise science.
Sprint towards these careers in Health + Sport Science
1. Sports scientist
In this role you’ll work with athletes to enhance their performance through the application of scientific principles. Sport scientists conduct assessments, analyse data, and create personalised training programs to optimise an athlete’s physical abilities.
2. Physical therapist
This gig is all about helping athletes recovering from injuries. You’ll use your knowledge of anatomy and physiology to help people regain strength and mobility, allowing them to get back to their sport as quickly and safely as possible.
3. Nutritionist
The focus for nutritionists in sport is on helping athletes develop healthy eating habits to maximise their performance. You’ll create customised diet plans and educate athletes on the importance of nutrition for energy, recovery, and overall wellbeing.
4. Biomechanist
Rather than study machines, in this biomechanics role you’ll study the mechanics of human movement and how it affects sports performance. This means using cool tech to analyse an athlete’s technique, helping them make improvements to reduce the risk of injury and enhance efficiency.
5. Exercise physiologist
These professionals design and implement fitness programs that help athletes and individuals improve their physical condition. They work in various settings, from sports teams to fitness centres.
6. Sport psychologist
Since the mind also plays a big role in sports performance, sport psychologists help athletes develop mental toughness, manage stress, and enhance their focus and confidence. In this job you’ll play a crucial role in helping athletes perform at their best under pressure.
7. Sports medicine physician
In this role you’ll diagnose and treat injuries related to physical activity, and provide medical care to athletes, including rehabilitation.
