Congratulations to Australia’s top science students who have won 17 medals at the 2025 International Science Olympiads

Seventeen of Australia’s brightest science students have returned from the 2025 International Science Olympiads with an incredible 17 medals – 4 gold, 7 silver and 6 bronze – plus unforgettable experiences that will shape their future STEM careers.

These students – chosen through a series of tough national exams and training camps – donned the green and gold to compete in Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Earth Science against more than 90 countries. Along the way, they built friendships, experienced new cultures and tested their skills on the world stage.

The Physics team delivered one of Australia’s best results in two decades, with gold medals for Yichen Eason Yang and Houlai Zhou. Both students have risen through Australian Science Innovations (ASI) pathways designed to foster these Olympians, showing how persistence and passion pay off.

In Biology, Matthew Wu took home gold in the Philippines, while every member of the team earned medals. Chemistry students impressed at the Olympiad in Dubai with results at the top end of their categories. For the Earth Science Olympiad, Alex Zhuang took home a gold, but the whole team deepened their knowledge and teamwork through fieldwork in New Zealand before competing in China.

“All our teams have achieved exceptional results. It’s a reflection of their grit and determination, and a testament to the quality programs delivered by teams who consistently go above and beyond for these students,” says Associate Professor Stella Clark, Chair of the Board at ASI. “We are immensely proud of their achievements and excited to share their outstanding results and inspiring moments.”

Congratulations to all of Australia’s 2025 Olympiad teams on their outstanding results!
