“It’s so important to push past the common stereotypes of what a mathematician is so people can explore the subject free from limitations.“
Lily Serna shares her thoughts on how useful maths really is.
Maths is a wonderfully rich and useful subject. I love that maths is all about solving puzzles. It’s logical by definition and there’s no ambiguity. It just makes sense and my mind finds comfort in how black and white it is.

Understanding maths is like having a toolkit: at Australian software giant Atlassian, if someone comes to me with a problem, I can pull out the right tool at the right time to find the solution.
If you struggle with maths, it’s important to remember that it’s all about building blocks, and you need to understand the basics to build your knowledge. If you get stuck, go back to the last step, practice, and go on from there. It’s about training your mind to think in a logical and systematic way — a skill that’s useful in any career.
