Bilal - technology graduate at Commonwealth Bank

Technology graduate Bilal Takach uses code to automate manual tasks for Commonwealth Bank, saving teams hours of time each month

A career in STEM was always on the cards for Bilal. With a love of physics and an interest in tech from an early age, he signed himself up for a data science engineering degree at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) and hasn’t looked back. While studying, he also completed two software engineering internships and completed the UTS BUILD leadership program.

He then landed a role as a technology graduate at Commonwealth Bank, where he writes code in Python to automate manual tasks, saving hours each month by a single press of a button. Bilal also needs to look into any problems with the code, use problem solving and critical thinking skills to automate new metrics, and support his team with any tasks they may have.

“The cool thing about my job is that I get to learn about all parts and teams of the bank,” Bilal says. “This way I have a view of how teams plan their success and keep track of how they’re performing. This gives me a decent understanding of what we’re looking out for, which metrics are important, and which demonstrate the team’s overall performance.”

He also thinks it’s awesome that his team gets to present data and reports to high level managers and even the CEO!

Bilal believes lots of exciting areas are popping up in data science, with new jobs being created as a result.

“More specifically in my field, automation is becoming more and more popular as data science improves so that will emerge as well,” he adds.

Something handy he’s learnt on his STEM journey so far is that change is constant, but if you focus on improving yourself and your skills, you’ll be fine. “Different coding languages emerge, different technologies come and go, but human qualities are timeless.
