Missing live shows? In response to COVID-19, ThinkInc – a leading Australian intellectual touring and events company – has launched a new online event series.

The organisation, which has ran tours for the likes of Jane Goodall, Richard Dawkins and Neil deGrasse Tyson, says the new Outside the Box series is “so much more than a webinar” and aims to bring the live event experience into people’s homes.

In partnership with ThinkInc, Careers with STEM has tickets to give away to some of their upcoming STEM-themed online shows!

Enter our competition below for the chance to win a ticket to one of the upcoming Outside the Box events. Five winners for each event will be drawn on the Thursday prior to the event date, and notified on the Friday.

Our Preposterous Universe with Sean Carroll

Sunday, 3 May 2020, 12pm AEST

Off the back of his most recent book, Something Deeply Hidden: Quantum Worlds and the Emergence of Spacetime, Sean Carroll will be taking the virtual stage to break down quantum mechanics, and explain why there are ‘many worlds’ and an infinite number of parallel universes.

If there’s anyone in any universe qualified to do it, it’s him. As a research professor and theoretical physicist at CalTech, Sean has sought to answer some of the most fundamental questions about our existence and the nature of reality itself.

When he’s not busy writing bestselling books and solving some of our greatest mysteries, he fills his time as a science adviser for movies like Avengers: Endgame! He even hosts a wildly popular podcast, Mindscape, where he covers physics, philosophy, pop culture and everything in between.

The event will be hosted by Alan Duffy, Research Fellow and Professor at Swinburne University and Lead Scientist at The Royal Institution of Australia.

The Neuroscience of Consciousness with Anil Seth

Sunday 17 May 2020, 7PM AEST

A world-renowned professor of Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience at the University of Sussex, Anil is undoubtedly a master of the mind. In his Outside The Box event, Anil will open your mind to what consciousness is beyond the realms of self-help and spirituality. He’ll break down its components, diving into ideas like:

  • Will technology ever develop consciousness of its own?
  • Are humans the only creatures on Earth to experience consciousness of self?
  • If consciousness is a product of our brain’s interpretation of the world, what happens if we start hacking it?

This event will consist of a 30-minute presentation by Anil, followed by a 30-minute fireside chat with the event host and a 30-minute Q&A session.
