Tips for building your dream tech career

Here are some helpful tech career tips from people living their best life

Thinking about a career with technology but not sure where to start?

The latest issue of Careers with STEM: Technology is full of stories of people who have not only landed a tech gig, but also found time to pursue their hobbies or other life goals at the same time!

Here are just a few.

Machine learning analyst Amy Yang

While studying her master of Data Science & Innovation at UTS, tech innovator Amy Yang used her tech smarts and interest in AI to help build an app giving hybrid and remote workers more ergonomic office setups with real-time advice.

Now she’s working as an associate machine learning analyst and is learning new things about AI every day, while being paid!

Amy’s advice for people starting out in AI is to focus on projects you’re interested in, and study with a friend to keep accountable!

Freelance data scientist James Thompson

Snowboarder James has represented New Zealand in the sport, so he wasn’t sure if he’d have time for uni. Today he’s happy to tell you not to worry about combining your professional sport with study.

James says Massey University’s well-developed online learning environment meant he could  both compete and train while studying his Bachelor of Science, majoring in computer science.

Now he’s a freelance data scientist getting paid to share his tech expertise with others.

Cyber security analyst Andra Cimpean

Professional chess player Andra says the pathway to her gig as a cyber security analyst was taking up all the opportunities unlocked through her degree at Edith Cowan University, including networking events and internships.

And she credits her chess playing with honing the problem-solving skills essential to her current role.

Tech intern Mitchell Dederer

Software development guru Mitchell was keen for hand-on experience to help him build software for a living,

While studying at Charles Sturt University, he landed an internship with a tech giant and says this is an excellent way to get a foot in the door in the industry.

Mitchell also credits Charles Sturt’s expert lecturers and his comprehensive IT education with helping him get on the ideal career path.
