Thinking about nursing? You don’t need an ATAR to start

Undergraduate Certificate in Nursing Study Foundations

Put this pathway program on your radar!

We love an alternative pathway. If you dream of becoming a nurse, you need to know about the Undergraduate Certificate in Nursing Study Foundations at Torrens University. It’s been designed for students who are new to university or don’t have the ATAR required for the Bachelor of Nursing.

Across two trimesters, you’ll build foundational knowledge in human biology, health and illness. You’ll also develop the academic skills you’ll need to succeed at university and in further study.

And bonus: it’s a fully online course so you can study from anywhere in Australia! Plus, Torrens University’s Study Start program will support you from day one as you transition into university study.

While the Undergraduate Certificate in Nursing Study Foundations doesn’t lead to eligibility for registration as a nurse, it can prepare you for further nursing study. Upon completing the certificate, you can move on to the Bachelor of Nursing (subject to meeting its course entry requirements).

Course insight from the Discipline Head – Nursing, Torrens University

Associate Professor Accamma Oommen, Discipline Head – Nursing at Torrens University

In addition to learning about human biology, health and illness, students develop skills in communicating health information, applying evidence and critical thinking, and using feedback to strengthen their learning, shares Associate Professor Accamma Oommen, Discipline Head – Nursing at Torrens University.

Accamma believes the Undergraduate Certificate in Nursing Study Foundations provides an opportunity for students to explore health-related subjects, experience university learning and develop academic skills before committing to a full degree.

“The certificate prepares students for further study, including progression to a Bachelor of Nursing or other health-related degrees,” says Accamma. “It can be particularly valuable for students who are new to university, returning to education or considering a career change, as it provides an opportunity to build confidence, academic skills and foundational health knowledge. While the certificate does not qualify graduates as nurses or guarantee entry into the Bachelor of Nursing, it can help students prepare for their next stage of study.”

Ultimately, the course creates an accessible pathway into nursing education.

“Through this program, we are supporting students to realise their nursing aspirations by providing a pathway that fosters academic readiness, personal growth and future success.”

If you’re considering nursing, Torrens University has multiple options so you can choose the qualification that suits you most.

“Students enter higher education with different experiences, goals and levels of preparedness,” says Accamma.

“Those who meet the entry requirements and feel ready can apply directly to the Bachelor of Nursing. For others, the certificate provides an alternate pathway into nursing.”
