The University of Melbourne has multiple research institutes that help drive research and development for students to reap the benefits.

Based in the heart of Australia’s capital, The Australian National University (ANU) is well known for its science research output and has the highest number of Nobel Laurates among staff and alumni in Australia. 

The STEM subjects that ANU offers are Engineering computing and cybernetics, Health and medical studies; Natural, physical and environmental science.

#5 Monash – 37 internationally

Monash University is the largest uni in Australia and is known for excellence in pharmacy and pharmacology, anatomy and physiology, engineering and nursing. 

The STEM subjects that Monash offers fall under the Engineering, Information technology; Medicine, nursing and health sciences, pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences, and science faculties. 

It’s ranking by subject: 

  • #4 in Australia for Engineering & Technology 
  • #3 in Australia for Life Sciences & Medicine 
  • #6 in Australia for Natural Sciences 

Honourable mentions: 

There were more of Australia’s top unis that made the list overall, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t wonderful STEM happening around the country!

The University of Queensland (UQ) made the top 5 list for each of the subject areas. They are known for their teaching and research, and have recently joined the list of unis that offer Massive open online courses (MOOCs).

The University of Western Australia (UWA) is also 7th in the world for mineral and mining engineering.
