Are you curious about how studying science can lead to an exciting career and impactful life?
The demand for skilled scientists is growing rapidly, with new fields emerging (think quantum technology and synthetic biology) and existing ones expanding (think healthcare and the environment). Studying science opens doors to endless career possibilities. But where do you start?
Join us for a free STEM + X career webinar, supported by QUT, to hear from STEM superstars who took a passion for science into their studies and are now saving the environment, advocating for women in STEM, investigating super massive black holes, and even presenting on TV.
Watch the full Webinar below.

In this webinar, you will meet:
- Sabrina Guse, an environmental science and journalism student who has founded a successful environmental education start-up to fuel her goal to help both people and our planet.
- Jodie Horan, an analytical chemist, whose early love for ‘mixing potions’ developed into a passion for chemistry that sees her ensuring communities have clean drinking water.
- Dr. Michael Cowley, an astrophysicist and senior lecturer, whose research is helping our understanding of galaxy evolution, and who brings his love for science into teaching first year university students.
- Lee Constable, Event Moderator, author and TV Presenter, best known for hosting Network 10 kids’ science TV show Scope.
Sharing their personal journeys and offering practical advice, the speakers will cover types of science careers, study pathways, internships, tips for going to uni, and things they wish they knew when they were at school.
Meet the panel
SABRINA GUSE – LinkedIn

Founder of EnviroMentoring
Degree: Bachelor of Journalism and Environmental Science
Sabrina Guse is a dedicated double degree student at QUT, studying Environmental Science and Journalism. She is the founder of EnviroMentoring, a start-up that offers mobile workshops to teach children about sustainability through activities like building bug hotels, crafting terrariums, and creating wormeries. Since its inception, EnviroMentoring has reached 1,000 children, with an ambitious goal of reaching 100,000 by 2030. Sabrina’s dedication to her cause was recognised in 2023 when she received the QUT Budding Entrepreneur Scholarship. With more workshops already booked for the next school holiday, Sabrina’s journey is just beginning.
JODIE HORAN – LinkedIn

Analytical Chemist at ALS Life Sciences
Degree: Bachelor of Science (Chemistry), QUT
Jodie is an enthusiastic and dedicated analytical chemist at environmental analysis company, ALS. From a young age, Jodie was fascinated by the magic of mixing “potions,” a curiosity that blossomed into a passion for chemistry. Encouraged by her supportive parents and inspired by a stylish and intelligent high school chemistry teacher, Jodie pursued her love for science at university, studying chemistry at QUT, where she thrived both academically and socially. Jodie’s university years were marked by a particular fondness for inorganic chemistry, which she now specialises in professionally. At ALS, she works with advanced instruments to analyse samples for metals such as mercury, arsenic, and lead. Her work ensures clean drinking water and safe environments, making a tangible impact on communities.
DR MICHAEL COWLEY – LinkedIn

Astrophysicist, Senior Lecturer at QUT, and an Adjunct Research Fellow at USQ
Degree: PhD Astrophysics, MQU and Bachelor of Applied Science (Astrophysics), QUT
Dr Michael Cowley is a leading astrophysicist at QUT, where he heads the QUT Astrophysics Research Group. His research delves into the fascinating realms of galaxy evolution and supermassive black holes. As the First-Year Coordinator for the QUT Bachelor of Science, Dr Cowley plays a crucial role in supporting new students as they transition into university life. Dr Cowley teaches physics, astrophysics, and data science for both undergraduate and postgraduate students, and he is known for his engaging lectures, educational seminars, and public talks on various STEM topics. His commitment to teaching excellence has been recognised with multiple awards, including the Faculty of Science’s Educator of the Year award in 2021 and the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in 2022.
