How to find your ideal STEM mentor

Looking for a mentor? You should be! Here’s how you can find the right guidance to build skills, confidence and career opportunities

A mentor can be a game-changer in your STEM journey. Whether you’re in high school, uni or just starting your career, having someone to guide you, share insights and cheer you on makes the path ahead less daunting – and way more exciting.

Start with your network

Mentors don’t have to be famous scientists or CEOs. They might already be in your world – a teacher who encourages your coding skills, a uni tutor, a family friend who works in engineering, or even a colleague in your casual job who’s great at problem-solving. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask if they’d be willing to share advice!

Look beyond your circle

Industry associations, STEM clubs and university programs often run mentorship schemes. LinkedIn is also a powerful tool – you can follow people in your field, comment on their posts and eventually send a friendly message introducing yourself. Pro tip: show genuine interest in a person’s work rather than asking straight away for mentorship.

Be clear about what you need

Before you choose someone, think about what you need. Do you want career advice? Help navigating subject choices? Insight into a specific industry? Knowing what you’re looking for will make it easier to find the right mentor – and easier for them to support you.

Remember, it’s a two-way street

Mentorship isn’t just about taking. Be respectful of their time, keep communication clear and let them know how their advice has helped. Sharing your own wins and progress makes the relationship rewarding for both sides!

Finding a mentor might feel daunting at first, but it’s really about building genuine connections. With a little curiosity and courage, you’ll discover people who are ready to share their wisdom – and help you map out an exciting STEM future.
