Check out the latest edition of Careers with STEM for inspiration and tips to combine your passion with a career in engineering
Australia has around half a million qualified engineers but needs a lot more to help the country thrive and innovate.
There’s a shortage of engineers to work in Defence, clean energy, power systems, construction, and software engineering. More diversity would help! For example, less than 20% of engineering graduates are women, and only 16% of qualified engineers in Australia are women.
And it’s a rewarding and always-changing profession. As Anna Quillinan, chief development officer – net zero energy solutions at Engie Australia & New Zealand says, careers in engineering are evolving quickly as society confronts one of its biggest challenges: climate change.
“Engineering also gives you the skills to build everything our society needs, be it bridges, roads, mines to produce critical minerals or robots to conduct surgeries too complex to be done with human hands,” Anna says.
This edition of Careers with STEM showcases careers and engineers helping us build a better future, be it with sustainable design, building new businesses or responding to climate change with renewable energy.

Featured on the cover is Harry Lucas, first profiled by Careers with Code in 2015, who has since gone on to found another company making big changes in manufacturing.
Harry says being both a mechatronics engineer and computer engineer has been one of his biggest career advantages, bridging the gap between different fields to come up with innovative solutions. Read his full profile in the magazine.
