IT + Arts
Current student Martina (Mia) Go proves you don’t have to pick just one passion. “Besides having an interest in tech, I’ve always been a very creative person. Monash allowed me to do both,” she says.
As part of a Bachelor of IT at Monash, you can do industry-based learning (IBL), which is an internship for six months. For Mia, it was a placement at Coles, where she was a business analyst working on store technology. “I saw the fruit of my labour in stores, which was really cool,” she says.
Monash experiences like this have helped Mia score a grad offer with KPMG, before she’s even finished studying!
IT + Science
Looking for a study combination that will change your life? Just ask Sassandra Rae, who didn’t set out to work in tech.
“I actually had no interest in IT,” Sassandra says. “My parents worked in IT. They always told me it is the future, and this is where you’ll get all the jobs. I’ve always been passionate about animals.”
This combination of parental advice and personal passion led to a double degree in IT and zoology at Monash.
A turning point for Sassandra’s interest in tech was also Monash’s IBL program, which landed her an opportunity to work at Jetstar. “I was doing robotics process automation, which is looking at automating really manual business systems. It’s a completely different area that I got to experience,” she says.
These days, Sassandra is a cyber analyst for McGrathNicol, but she credits IBL for showing her how exciting real-world tech careers can be: “Being able to build something you’re really proud of and that you’ve put so much work into. . . that was a moment for me. I thought: this is the type of feeling I want to have for the rest of my career.”
IT + Entrepreneurship
Is this your Monash lecturer? Professor Shonali Krishnaswamy is an artificial intelligence researcher and entrepreneur.
Shonali’s career journey took an unexpected turn from the moment she first arrived at Monash. “I came here to do my Master’s. It became a PhD because I just loved being at Monash. The sense of community that this university gives you is a pretty special thing,” she says.
Her career has since taken her from Monash to leading global research in Singapore, to co-founding a start-up that’s revolutionised how the majority of the country’s health claims are processed. Imagine developing something that impacts a whole nation!
Now Shonali is back at Monash running Deep Tech Entrepreneurship, a unique new subject that teaches students to turn ideas into world-changing products. “Students go through a journey of coming up with an idea and getting to a point where they can make a presentation to an investor and have a product and product market assessment,” says Shonali. “It is really all those things that you don’t find in books.”
