Get paid to train in information technology

Getting great work experience while earning and learning in information technology is a fast way to get into the IT workforce.

By undertaking an IT Traineeship, you can earn a salary of $50,342* plus 15.4% superannuation – and that’s just starting out.

The IT traineeship is offered by ASIO, the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation, and is aimed at Year 12 students or students in their first year of a vocational education ICT course.

The IT Traineeship exposes you to work placement across multiple teams, and in addition to your salary ASIO will cover the costs relating to the completion of a Certificate IV in Information Technology.

On successful completion of the IT Traineeship program you will be promoted to an Information Technology Employee Grade 1 with a salary of $79,206* plus 15.4% Superannuation.

It’s no secret ASIO’s role is to protect Australia and its people from security threats such as terrorism and espionage. What you may not be aware of is the importance technology plays in achieving ASIO’s mission.

As an Information Technology Trainee you will work alongside IT professionals in delivering the ICT Infrastructure that keeps Australians safe. IT trainees undertake a Certificate IV in Information Technology while receiving on-the-job training and mentoring.

Your learning does not stop once you have completed your Certificate IV. Our IT professionals have ongoing access to professional development training and are supported in gaining industry certifications from leading IT vendors.

There’s a strong need for increased diversity across all areas of ICT, with less than 40% of jobs in ICT filled by women. Female applicants interested in a career in IT are highly encouraged to apply to the IT Traineeship.

Experience and training

Trainees will work in multiple teams including server operations, desktops, networking data, voice and video, information security, application development and service management.

You could work in a team that are installing new servers; or designing and managing IP data networks; assuring the security of ASIO’s ICT infrastructure and proactively managing the information security needs of the Organisation, for example.

The Application Developer team provides a range of services related to the development and support of web applications specifically, undertaking design, development, testing and deployment of project and operational requirements. Applicants with a keen eye for coding are sure to enjoy a placement within this area.

The Server Operations team is responsible for the design, maintenance and administration of ASIO’s corporate server environment. The team perform tasks such as installing new servers, controlling access to applications and performing upgrades and patching to keep the systems safe and secure.

Everyone who works in ASIO is required to hold the highest level of security clearance in Australia. To be eligible, you need to be an Australian Citizen.
