Tech careers

A tech degree at QUT is all about opening doors. We caught up with Craig, Taylah, Aleng and Lachie to see where tech is taking them.

Craig Costello: Professor, QUT School of Computer Science

Craig’s journey – from researching cyber security in the Netherlands to working on cutting-edge cryptography at Microsoft – has been shaped by one key truth: technology never stops evolving. “That’s what makes a career in IT so exciting,” Craig says. “There’s always something new to learn, new problems to solve and new opportunities to make a difference.”

Craig says tech is creating more opportunities than ever before. “The demand for tech professionals is only growing – and those with the right skills will always be needed,” Craig says. “Right now, businesses across every industry are undergoing a digital transformation. The ability to think critically, solve problems and adapt to new technologies will always be in demand.”

Taylah McCollough, Co-founder and CTO, Forage Insights, Women in Digital Rising Star of the Year, 2024

Start-up co-founder Taylah McCullough says studying business and IT at QUT has launched her dream career. “Technology is universal. My degree has opened the opportunity to work in any country and any sector I choose.”

During her double degree, Taylah found there were opportunities galore to develop her skills:

–       Through a collab between QUT and tech company Cisco, Taylah co-founded digital health startup Forage Insights, winning a $20,000 grant.

–       While at QUT, Taylah’s student team won top spot in the Copenhagen Business School Global Case Competition with an AI-powered digital strategy.

–       In 2024, Taylah was named Women in Digital’s Rising Star of the Year.

Taylah’s big takeaway? Tech’s not just about coding – it’s about solving problems that help people. “Once you understand that, the technical skills will follow.”

Degree: Bachelor of IT (Computer Science) / Bachelor of Business (Finance), QUT
