From electrical to civil engineering, there are so many different pathways to build yourself an impressive career
This year’s Careers with STEM: Engineering magazine is packed with life-changing career inspo for people who want to make the world a better place. Meet a whole range of engineers working in different fields, including Nusrat Binte Nijam (information and communication technology engineer), Shakunthi Neelawatura (electrical engineer) and Emmeline Rocks (civil engineer).

3 engineers, 3 different pathways
🚆 Nusrat’s journey into information and communication technology engineering involved dabbling in as many extracurriculars as possible! She studied a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronics, Robotics and Automation Engineering) (Honours) at Macquarie University, and took an engineering internship through Macquarie University, before becoming a Graduate Engineer for Downer and working on train fleets.
⚡ Shakunthi kicked off in electrical engineering with a belief that teamwork makes the dreamwork! She developed excellent networks by studying a Bachelor of Engineering (Electrical Power) (Honours) at Edith Cowan University, did an internship at Chevron Australia and graduate work at BHP. Now she’s a Horizons Electrical Engineer for Chevron Australia.
👷 Emmeline’s pathway to civil engineering was through studying at Charles Sturt University, taking on paid cadetships. A smart way to study while bringing in some cash! These days Emmeline works at Zauner Construction.
Look for scholarships and cadetships
You too could nab a scholarship or paid cadetship, so keep your eyes open!
Emmeline’s cadetship allowed her the chance to work on major projects while studying. “These experiences gave me insights I wouldn’t have gained in a classroom and connected me with industry,” she says. Plus, Charles Sturt University has 25 x $20,000 Transgrid Engineering Scholarships up for grabs!
From sustainability to train systems, these engineers are solving global problems, one project at a time. Their careers are living proof that engineering isn’t just about maths and machines – it’s about people and purpose!
