Worldwide, health careers are in demand. Since 1990, the number of health jobs has nearly tripled. But according to the Global Burden of Disease Study, the world needs a lot more health workers.
At the moment, there’s over 120 million people working in health care. But researchers, publishing their work in The Lancet Public Health, reckon we need another 34.4 million health workers to give everyone on Earth the care they deserve. There’s a huge range of jobs that need filling – 7.1 million doctors and physicians, 23.9 million nurses and midwives, 1.8 million dentists and 1.6 million pharmacists.
And there’s a big demand for both men and women ready to blaze a career trail. Although almost 70% of health workers are women, less than half of physicians and doctors are female. Meanwhile CSU reckons that only 11% of Australian nurses are men. We need heroes of all genders to address these imbalances.
