Here’s what it’s like to help others lead fuller, more independent lives as you study occupational therapy at Charles Sturt University
If you’re finishing school and want a career that’s hands-on, creative and truly makes a difference, Occupational Therapy (OT) could be the perfect fit. For Chloe Debono, a third-year Bachelor of Occupational Therapy student at Charles Sturt University’s Port Macquarie campus, studying OT has been the pathway to helping people live more independent, fulfilling lives.
“I’ve always wanted to do something meaningful,” Chloe says. “Occupational therapy lets me combine creativity, health and empathy – every day is about helping someone achieve their goals.”
At Charles Sturt, Chloe’s learning goes far beyond the classroom. From using hoists and wheelchairs to working with simulated patients, students build confidence through practical, real-world experiences that prepare them for placements and future careers in allied health.
That preparation came to life for Chloe during a standout placement experience. “One moment that really stuck with me was prescribing a client a power wheelchair,” she recounts. “It allowed her to feel the sun on her face again after being limited to indoors – she had the biggest smile. It reminded me exactly why I chose this rewarding career.”
For Chloe, one of the best parts of studying at Charles Sturt is the support from passionate lecturers who genuinely care about student success.
“They’re approachable, knowledgeable, and they want us to graduate confident and capable,” she says.
The mix of theory, practical learning and real-world placements gives Charles Sturt OT students the confidence to step straight into the workforce and start changing lives.
“Definitely do your research and explore what’s out there,” Chloe says. “I couldn’t recommend allied health enough – working with people to strengthen areas in their life is truly amazing. You get to do so much good in the world.”
If you’re ready to turn your passion for helping others into a lifelong career, Charles Sturt’s Bachelor of Occupational Therapy is the perfect place to start. You’ll learn from industry experts, gain hands-on experience in real health settings, and graduate ready to make a real difference in your community.
