Pat Hwang

User experience designer, Google

Pat works on the user experience part of Google Maps, testing and taking on feedback from users and designing user flows to make sure the app is easy and enjoyable to use.

After starting down an engineering study path and realising it wasn’t for him, Pat came across UX Design and hasn’t looked back. “It was the perfect blend of both of my passions for creativity and technology,” Pat says.

His favourite subject at high school was Visual Arts, but Pat didn’t always believe he could pursue a creative field given many of his peers from school were choosing degrees like medicine, law and business.

“The coolest thing about my job has to be the fact that I get to work on an app that is loved by millions of users from around the world, and delve into innovative technologies relating to EVs,” Pat says.

Hi advice to students headed for uni is to explore the industry and become more aware of career opportunities early on.

“Check out things like societies and networking events. Like me, you might never know what your dream job is until you’ve really explored and discovered it.”

Pat’s top career tip

“Try out as many diverse opportunities as you can to broaden your perspectives.”
