Food security, sustainability, climate change, tech, trade: the future of food is full of big questions. At UQ Open Day, find out how a career in food and agriculture could help answer them!
The future of food and agriculture is about more than what ends up on your plate. It’s about how we grow it, move it, manage it and make sure people can access it in a changing world while ensuring the environment’s sustainability.
At UQ Open Day, students can explore how The University of Queensland’s Bachelor of Agribusiness / Bachelor of Agricultural Science dual program can prepare them to be part of that future.
The four-year program builds strong business skills in marketing, finance, supply chain management, data analysis and the application of emerging agricultural technologies. Plus, there’s important exposure to the sciences behind food production, like animal biology, plant science, ecology and chemistry.
Students can shape their studies through majors in agronomy, animal science or horticulture, and build practical field and lab skills through industry visits, field trips and hands-on learning. They also have access to UQ’s Gatton facilities, including research greenhouses, a plant nursery, a commercial dairy and more than 1,000 hectares of subtropical farmland.
At UQ Open Day, students can also meet academics like Associate Professor Risti Permani, Program Coordinator of the Bachelor of Agribusiness program. Risti is an agricultural economist whose work explores how food and farming systems can become more sustainable, innovative and digitally connected, including through her work with seaweed, beef and dairy industries in Australia and Indonesia.

“Food and farming systems are changing fast, and students need to be able to think across science, business, sustainability and technology,” Risti says. “This dual program helps students build that bigger-picture view and explore how they can contribute to more productive, resilient and innovative food systems.”
Graduates can pursue careers in agronomy, crop science, biosecurity, horticulture, animal science, research, government, agribusiness, supply chains, finance and export marketing.
Head to UQ Open Day at St Lucia on Sunday 2 August or Gatton on Sunday 16 August 2026 and meet academics like Risti!
