Eva De Groot shows how a double degree can take you anywhere

For third-year student Eva De Groot, who chose ACU’s double degree in Nursing and Paramedicine, opportunity and flexibility were key: “I took the double degree because I wanted to broaden my career options,” she says.
The ACU edge
ACU helps their students develop a global perspective through Short-Term International Study Experiences (STISEs), where second- and third-year nursing, midwifery and/or paramedicine students can travel to places like India, Timor Leste and Chile.
Eva’s STISE trip to Hyderabad, India, facilitated by the Catholic Health Association of India gave her the opportunity to see how hospitals and wards work in a different cultural setting. And that experience is invaluable.
“In Australia, it’s very multicultural and you’re always going to be looking after people from different cultures,” she says. “When you learn about other cultures and how they do things, you can adjust your care,” says Eva, “which can be really beneficial in your nursing practice and personal growth.”
Eva says that ACU is unique because “we’re one of the only unis that does the double degree.” And that fosters a strong community. “I really enjoy how small our cohort is!”
She is now spoiled for choice when it comes to her future plans. First, she’s hoping to get a graduate role either in paramedicine or nursing. Then, when she has some experience under her belt she hopes to move overseas. “My dad is Dutch, so I have family overseas. I’d love to maybe travel a bit and work over there.”
As you can see, a nursing career has no borders! If you’re still unsure about your career, Eva’s advice is: “Just have confidence and go into something that you enjoy.”
