With 130,000 construction jobs up for grabs, there’s never been a smarter time to future-proof the skyline
Think beyond the old school stereotypes. From tackling housing shortages to climate-proofing infrastructure, next-gen planners call for as much solution-scaffolding as physical building. And no, hard hats aren’t always required.
Equipped with a new breed of digital tools, engineers have become the ultimate city-shapers, balancing community needs with design and safety considerations to future-proof our public spaces. As professional problem-solvers, they spend 9-to-5 turning blueprints into billion-dollar builds, delivering things like zero carbon transport networks, sustainable housing hubs and smart retail precincts. And in good news for engineering grads, opportunities are levelling up.
Ahead of schedule
Don’t wait until you’ve finished studying to break ground. Most construction companies open graduate program applications a year in advance.
Site stats
130,000
The number of additional construction workers Australia needs to meet its goal of building 1.2 million new homes by 2029.

Meet Hayley Bell, co-founder and director of Belnic Constructions.
The groundwork: The QUT grad found her calling early on. “I started working in a commercial fitout during my first year of uni.”
The foundation: Hayley studied a Bachelor of Urban Development (Construction Management) to get the right mix of skills. “I did practical subjects that were directly relevant to the work I was doing – estimating, contract administration and programming.”
The build: Every day is about high-stakes coordination. “My focus is on running live projects – coordinating trades consultants and clients and preparing cost plans for new projects.”
The handover: Her advice? Be bold. “Don’t be modest about achievements or what you want in terms of career progression… there are so many opportunities out there.”
