Emily Calandrelli, STEM TV star aka @thespacegal, is a former MIT engineer turned science communicator.
Emily has held some super interesting roles such as host and co-executive producer of Netflix’s Emily’ Wonder Lab Correpondent, Netflix’s Bill Nye Saves the World, host and executive producer of FOX’s Xploration Outer Space and she has also been an author of the STEM chapter book series the Ada Lace Adventures.
Growing up in West Virginia, USA, Emily never imagined that one day she would be a TV star, an MIT grad, author of a children’s book series, host of a TV show, and a STEM role model.
She was the first person in her family to pursue STEM and knew little about engineering, but she quickly found opportunities to explore it through the NASA Space Grant Program and enjoyed it. It wasn’t until her senior year in high school that she started researching jobs with high starting salaries and learned having an engineering degree would be a good starting point!
Emily is also a professional speaker who has spoken at venues like Google, Pixar, MIT, Texas Instruments, CERN, and dozens of schools and universities around the country. She focuses her talks on the topics of science communication, space exploration, and women in STEM. Her three TEDx talks are available on YouTube.
Emily thinks diversity of individuals leads to diversity of thought which leads to diverse solutions and better innovation. Her advice to young people who want to learn about and pursue a career in STEM is “to follow their passion and curiosity for all things science as that is the most important quality to succeed”.
