Drew Garcia

Mechanical engineer

Wanting a job that balanced creativity, problem-solving and physically building things, Drew Garcia landed on mechanical engineering

Drew is a product manager and mechanical engineer at Siemens Mobility, a company focused on rail transport. Currently he’s managing a visual inspection system where he oversees the product lifecycle from research and development through to strategy, innovation and customer-focused improvements.

“What I enjoy most is that the role allows me to combine technical engineering knowledge with creativity, problem-solving and collaboration across teams,” Drew says. “No two days are ever the same, and the rail industry itself is evolving quickly with new technologies and innovation.”

Working in rail wasn’t on Drew’s bingo card, but once he entered the space, he saw just how many opportunities exist for mechanical engineers and beyond.

“There’s growing demand in areas such as electronics, AI and machine learning, software engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering and advanced automation,” he says.

And the degree that took him there? Edith Cowan University’s Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours). Drew chose ECU for its hands-on learning approach.

“Back in high school, ECU offered STEM summer programs for aspiring students,” he explains. “That gave me confidence that the university genuinely invested in practical experiences and opportunities outside the classroom. It turned out to be true throughout my degree.”

Drew recommends getting as much hands-on experience as possible by getting involved in projects like building a PC or working on a car. Plus, stay curious!

“Engineering teaches you how to think critically and solve problems, but that mindset starts long before university. The people who grow the most are usually the ones who continue asking questions, exploring ideas and learning outside of what’s required.”

Drew’s path

  • Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) Honours, ECU
  • Engineering program, Tokyo City University x ECU
  • Engagement assistant, Engineers Australia
  • Undergraduate mechanical engineer, Primero Group
  • Mechanical engineering intern, Siemens Mobility
