Robots, roll out!
This National Science Week, CSIRO is inviting young Australians to design, test and fine-tune their own rescue robots. No laboratory or fancy equipment required!
This free program challenges you to create robots capable of tackling environments that are too dangerous or difficult for humans. Your robot might:
- Navigate mysterious caves and lava tubes
- Monitor marine environments and ecosystems
- Enter hazardous locations and disaster zones
- Explore space and other worlds
It’s a tough gig, but somebody’s bot has to do it.
It’s easy as 1, 2, 3!
- Design and test your own robot
- Explore the free online game
- Play the card game
Real science, real robots
Be sure to check out the interactive online game inspired by real CSIRO research. It’s a chance to learn from CSIRO roboticists, including electrical and computer engineer Katrina Lo Surdo.
Katrina’s own engineering origin story began with extracurricular STEM clubs, forums and competitions at school.
“It’s a full-circle journey for me,” Katrina says. “Through these activities, I met role models who could answer my questions, build my confidence and show me what was possible through a STEM career.”

No screens? No problem!
Want to give robotics a go away from the screen? CSIRO has you covered. The initiative includes:
- Student workbooks
- Hands-on investigations
- An unplugged robot card game
Get others involved
Schools, families and community groups can all take part. So grab a teacher and get involved! It’s all curriculum-aligned and classroom-ready.
Power up and win
Participants can submit their robot designs for the chance to win prizes. Even better, the first 200 people to register will score a free CSIRO Publishing book pack! So register now.
National Science Week runs from 15–23 August 2026. Don’t miss these National Science Week events!
