Happy International Women in Engineering Day! To celebrate, here are seven women in engineering doing amazing things and offering up advice to those who want to follow in their footsteps.
1. Katrina Lo Surdo – robotics engineer
Katrina studied electrical and computer engineering before landing her dream job at the cutting edge of robotics at Data61 at CSIRO. She primarily works on circuit board design and hardware development, and is excited about the growth in her profession. Suss out her STEM journey and opportunities in robotics.
2. Barbara Van De Sande – industrial design engineer
In high school, Barbara’s teacher told her she’d never be good enough for medical engineering. It ignited a fire in her. Check out her study and career path, plus her advice for young girls interested in STEM, here.
3. Claire Chaikin-Bryan – civil and environmental engineer
An engineer with a knack for coding, Claire is using her STEM skills to make communities more liveable. Find out more about her unique skill set and her dream job as Smart City Lead at Lake Macquarie City Council.
4. Mary Poniard – biomedical engineer
Biomedical engineer Mary is making sure 2000 new ventilators for Australian intensive care wards are ready to care for COVID-19 patients. Find out how she mixes areas of engineering and where in the world STEM has taken her.
5. Genevieve De Michele – civil engineer
Civil and construction engineer Genevieve loves seeing her work in the real world everyday. Her journey started with a degree from QUT, and now she is the director of Gluco Consultants.
6. Taylah Griffin – aircraft engineer
Taylah hadn’t spent much time on planes before signing up for a degree in aerospace engineering – now she has a seriously cool grad gig testing top-end military aircraft. Don’t miss her epic advice for students tackling intense degrees.
7. Monique Alfris – solar energy engineer
Monique is the co-founder of Pollinate Energy, which aims to bring electricity to the estimated 1.2 billion people globally that live without it. She says, “Engineering is a rewarding career choice, where you can help solve the world’s greatest challenges.”
